David Wagner: The fans have longed for this home win

After more than seven months, Schalke 04 finally picked up a home win in the Bundesliga on Saturday 31st August as they defeated Hertha BSC. After the Royal Blues won 3-0 against Hertha, manager David Wagner and players Guido Burgstaller and Daniel Caligiuri stressed that it was a determined and deserved victory. The quotes were detailed by schalke04.de.

David Wagner:

They were extremely hot conditions out there, which made it difficult for both teams. Despite that my boys kept trying and kept running. Although at first this strategy didn’t work, they never gave up and tried again and again to attack dangerous areas so we could force the own goal and make it 1-0. Berlin also had a good chance, and Alex Nübel had to make a super save.

We also forced the mistake that led to the second own goal. The boys wanted to push themselves to the limit in an effort to control the game today. The build-up play and strike for our third goal was magnificent. The atmosphere was fantastic. You can tell how long people have wanted this win at home and they have also been extremely vocal about it. The atmosphere was very important to us. It was clear that we couldn’t have done it alone. We need this atmosphere, this energy. We had both today. That’s why the boys were able to run so much in the temperatures today.

Ante Covic:

We imagined that the result would have been different. We knew exactly what we needed to do. Schalke were a bit more dominant at the beginning of the match, without threatening too much in the final third. We had the first chance with Dodi Lukebakio who forced Alexander Nübel into a good save. After that, Schalke became more and more dominant. Shortly before half time their dominance produced a result with the own goal – not to blame Niklas Stark. In the second half we again steadied the ship, only to concede another own goal. Then the third goal was a wonder goal.

In order to take anything from Schalke, you must be clinical. Today we were not. We have conceded eight goals in our last three games: it’s clear therefore what we must focus on in the next two weeks.

Guido Burgstaller:

We can be really pleased with the way we played football today. Celebrating a win at home with our fans is a really nice feeling. We forced out our goals brilliantly. I was a bit shocked that I had taken the ball from Niklas Stark, so my shot was a bit hectic and I unfortunately missed – I obviously should have scored. It doesn’t matter ultimately though; we won 3-0 which is the most important thing. We wanted to press them early on and put them under pressure. Jonjoe Kenny played fantastically today on the right-hand side. Thankfully the own goals went our way. This is the Schalke team that we want to be and we have to carry on like this. We are heading in the right direction, but have to carry on working hard.

Daniel Caligiuri:

I’m pleased that I was able to assist the first goal. We fully deserved to take the lead at that time of the game. It’s really important that we’ve won a home game again after such a long time. You could see from the off today that we were desperate to pick up all three points. We played really good football and everybody played for one another. As a result, it was only a matter of time before we broke the deadlock. We need to have fun on the football pitch and fight for each other. We dealt with some tricky situations very well I thought. Our whole defence was calm and collected too. We have a laid a marker down before the international break with this win.
