Manuel Baum appointed as new head coach of FC Schalke 04

Manuel Baum will take over as head coach of FC Schalke 04, with immediate effect. The 41-year-old was previously employed by the DFB, where he was in charge of coaching the Germany U18s. He also provided support for the association’s coaching courses. Baum has signed a contract with the Royal Blues until 30th June 2022.

“We have been able to appoint a real expert in his field for Schalke 04 in the form of Manuel Baum. Anyone who looks at his employment history will recognize that his teams always showed up with a clearly defined game plan. That’s something which is extremely important for us in our current situation,” said Jochen Schneider, head of sport and communication. “We are convinced that Manuel Baum’s personality and coaching style are a great fit for Schalke 04. We would also like to thank the DFB for releasing him so quickly in order for him to take up this new role.”

Baum is pleased to return to the Bundesliga. “Schalke 04 are a huge club with great tradition and a lot of potential. Our most pressing task is to bring positive results as soon as possible, both in training as well as in matches. I am convinced of the quality in our squad.”

Naldo returns as member of coaching staff

A familiar face will be alongside him on the touchlines: Naldo will return to Schalke 04 as a member of the coaching team. The former centre-back played for the Royal Blues between 2016 and January 2019, featuring in 80 competitive games. Naldo has signed a contract until 30th June 2022.

“With over 500 competitive games to his name, Naldo is a great addition to our coaching team,” said Jochen Schneider. “He knows Schalke from his time as a player. The decisive factor for us was his expertise both on and off the pitch. Naldo will bring a lot of positive energy to the dressing room.”

The Brazilian, who also holds German citizenship, is looking forward to his new role. “It feels really good to be back at Schalke; everyone knows that this club has a place in my heart. I want to put everything that I’ve learnt in my 19-year playing career into being a member of the coaching team and supporting Manuel Baum as well as possible.
