Timo Becker: It’s possible to see the progress we’ve made over the last weeks
Timo Becker played a key part in the 1-1 draw at SV Darmstadt 98 in Saturday evening (21/3). Shortly before the break, the defender sent a header crashing off the post, with the rebound falling to teammate Moussa Sylla. The striker pounced on the opportunity, putting the Royal Blues ahead for the time being.
“I was happy to set it up for him like that,” shared the 28-year-old. “I was incredibly happy for him; we all know that we can count on Moussa to score when we need it.” With the draw, the Royal Blues were able to maintain their position in first place, ahead of Darmstadt. “Darmstadt are extremely strong at home – we knew that it would be tough,” Becker said, before praising the team’s performance. “We had them well under control and didn’t allow any chances from open play. It was clear to see that there was a lot at stake in this game, and we can be pleased to have picked up a point on the road.”
Becker also shared that, over the last weeks, it’s been clear to see just how much the team have grown on the pitch. “We saw against Hannover already that we’re much more stable at the back and that we’re managing to put our opponents under pressure. Today, we didn’t make the most of all of our chances, but it’s possible to see the progress we’ve made over the last weeks.” He added that their goal also wasn’t by chance, but rather “the result of exactly those things that we’ve worked on.”
I’ve been able to put in two good performances against two tough sides recently and I’m happy to have been able to help the team like that.
The defender is also pleased with his own personal development this season. A medial collateral ligament tear in his knee sidelined him for several months back in September, before he was able to make his comeback in the lead-up to Christmas. Since then, Becker has been able to regain his place in the starting line-up. “The period after my injury wasn’t an easy one, and it took a few games for me to get back in the rhythm of things,” he shared. “However, I’ve been able to put in two good performances against two tough sides recently and I’m happy to have been able to help the team like that.”
With the Darmstadt game behind them, the focus now shifts to Karlsruhe. Following the international break, the Royal Blues will welcome KSC to the VELTINS-Arena on Easter Sunday (5/4). “We can now rest and recharge a bit. Our focus will then be on the next game, and if we continue working the way we have been, then we’ll be on the right path.”
