Miron Muslic: Very pleased with the way the lads played
Schalke held on to top spot with a 1-1 draw away to promotion rivals SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday evening (21/3). After the game, head coaches Miron Muslic and Florian Kohfeldt, as well as Kenan Karaman and Dejan Ljubičić, gave their thoughts.
Miron Muslic:
First and foremost, we wish Luca Marseiler all the very best after his serious injury. It was a huge shock for everyone. Looking at the game itself, it’s a good point for us against the best home side in the league. Very few teams have come here and taken something. I thought we did really well in the first half and kept them away from our goal, although you’re never going to completely shut out a side with that kind of threat and quality. A lot of teams lose a game like that after the break, so in the end I think the 1-1 draw is absolutely fair and I’m very pleased with the way the lads played.
Florian Kohfeldt:
The first half was extremely tough for us against a Schalke side that are superbly organised, know exactly what they want to do and combine strong pressing patterns, clear attacking areas and individual quality. That is very hard to defend against and both teams pushed each other to the limit. We could easily have fallen apart after the first half, but emotionally it was an outstanding response from us to stay in the game after the disallowed goal, the injury and then going behind. That is why I think the draw was deserved in a very good game between two sides with clear ideas of how they want to play.
Kenan Karaman:
We can definitely live with the point. We knew what a difficult away game this would be. We played well for long spells, even if the equaliser just before the break was a bit of a blow and we were not able to reward ourselves with a half-time lead despite being the better team in the first half. Both sides then had good chances after the break and in the end it was a fair result. Now our focus shifts to the next game – and we’re grateful for the incredible support from the fans who were here tonight and who will be a big factor for us again in the coming weeks.
Dejan Ljubičić:
We played really well in the first half, although it’s always tough defending against such tall attackers. We came here to win, but of course we will take the point – and with it the knowledge that we handled Darmstadt’s attack pretty well from open play and put in a good performance.
