Kenan Karaman: We need to play a lot better next week

Jakob Fimpel and Fortuna coach Daniel Thioune reflected on Saturday’s 2-0 defeat in Düsseldorf at the post-match press conference. Kenan Karaman and Ron Schallenberg also gave their thoughts after the game.

Jakob Fimpel:

Düsseldorf fully deserved to win. We had hoped to play a lot better than we did in the end. That was partly down to us and partly down to our opponents – Fortuna played well. We knew that the flexibility they have in the middle of the park is difficult to deal with. We only had two periods today where we were actually in the game. After Myron van Brederode had a goal ruled out after around 15 minutes, Moussa Sylla had a big chance to put us ahead in the 24th minute. Our reaction to going 1-0 down was also decent. Otherwise though, we lacked a cutting edge up front. We were chasing the ball for too much of today’s game and were always one step behind them. We want to end the season with a much better display against Elversberg.

Daniel Thioune:

We started today’s game well. I thought our structure and our play in the centre of the pitch were both good. We played some good football and were extremely flexible too. I’m extremely pleased that Dawid Kownacki scored. He’s had a tough time recently after his grandfather died – he was really close with him. Even if not everything he attempted today came off, his goal set us on the way to victory. Myron van Brederode then got our second goal. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for Schalke on the final matchday against Elversberg. Ultimately though, if we want to finish third, we have to make sure we win in Magdeburg ourselves first of all.

Kenan Karaman:

Jakob Fimpel prepared us well, gave us good ideas and energy before the game. We failed to put all of that into action against a strong Düsseldorf side. Fortuna were extremely versatile in possession. We struggled to get a hold of the game. We also only created a few chances to score. Things are tough for us right now. We need to play a lot better next week against Elversberg. We can’t end the season with another performance like today’s.

Ron Schallenberg:

There were only a few short periods where we were able to play our own game today. We did better after their first goal but weren’t incisive enough overall. We don’t have much confidence right now and the mental side of things obviously plays a role when you are struggling like we are. I want to put this game in the past now and turn my full focus to the Elversberg match. We really want to end a disappointing season for us all with a win.
