Edin Džeko: I’ve won many titles, but I’ve never celebrated like this before
FC Schalke 04 will round off a hugely successful campaign on Sunday (17/5) with a 15:30 CEST kick-off against Eintracht Braunschweig at home. In the matchday 34 clash, Edin Džeko wants to sign off the season with another three points alongside his teammates and the fans at the VELTINS-Arena before the squad are presented with the championship trophy.
“We’ll give absolutely everything,” said the striker, despite Schalke having already wrapped up the 2. Bundesliga title two weeks ago. “There’s still a lot at stake for our opponents, and there are important decisions still to be made elsewhere as well. That means we have a duty to give our all and try to take the three points.” Schalke’s number 10 added: “We want to finish this incredible season with a win!”
I said from day one that Schalke belong in the Bundesliga.
Džeko told us: “I’ve won quite a few titles during my career. But I’ve never celebrated one like we did here at Schalke.” The 40-year-old says he will never forget the moments and the days following the 1-0 home win over Düsseldorf, the result that sealed the club’s return to the top flight. It is quite a statement considering the Bosnian international’s trophy haul, having collected major honours in Germany, England and Italy over the past two decades.
World Cup qualification caps off perfect few months
Being able to look back on a successful promotion campaign at the end of the 2. Bundesliga season was always firmly in Džeko’s mind when he decided to join FC Schalke 04. “I said from day one that Schalke belong in the Bundesliga,” said the forward. “I wanted to help bring the club back to where it belongs. The fact that I also qualified for the World Cup with the Bosnia and Herzegovina national team has made the past few months perfect. I absolutely made the right decision.”
Even when he was sidelined for several weeks with a shoulder injury after the decisive World Cup qualifying play-off against Italy, Džeko never doubted that the Royal Blues would be back in the Bundesliga next season. “I had complete faith in the lads,” he said. “They did a fantastic job.”
