Edin Džeko: We are keeping calm and concentrating on the next task at hand

Following two substitute appearances, against Kaiserslautern and in Bochum, Edin Džeko made his first start for the Royal Blues on Saturday (07/02) against Dynamo Dresden. After half-time, the striker was able to bag his second and third goals in Schalke colours. However, he was unable to be fully content come the final whistle.

“When you are 2-0 up at home, you’ve got to be winning the game”, said the Bosnian, who featured for 70 minutes and converted two of his three shots on goal. In doing so, Džeko became the oldest player to net a brace in Bundesliga 2 history at the age of 39 years and 327 days. The record had stood since just after the turn of the century, when Slawomir Chalaskiewicz scored twice for SV Babelsberg against Schweinfurt aged 38 years and 142 days back in 2002.

That was merely a side note for Schalke’s number 10 come full-time at the VELTINS-Arena after Hasan Kuruçay’s own goal and an equaliser from Thomas Keller in the closing stages meant that the contest ended level at 2-2. “We dropped two points. Dresden came back into the game pretty much from nowhere”, believed Džeko, who had felt very differently following the 2-2 draw against 1. FC Kaiserslautern just two weeks prior. In that match-up, the Royal Blues were trailing 2-0 before his debut goal in Schalke colours helped the side to still earn a point.

The sharpshooter’s double against Dresden served to underline his qualities in front of goal. The fact that each goal was scored eye-catchingly had little significance for the 39-year-old, however, since “whether you score from one yard out or 20 is unimportant. The key thing is that the ball lands in the net”, according to Džeko.

He stresses that that it is important to now analyse the game in order for things to go better in Kiel next Sunday (15/02). “We need to continue to work hard”, emphasised the goalscorer, who believes a strong performance will be delivered next time out. “We are keeping calm and concentrating on the next task at hand.”
