Miron Muslic: We got our reward thanks to our incredible determination
Despite being a man down for much of the game, Schalke 04 secured a huge 2-1 win over SV Elversberg on Sunday (12/4). Both coaches gave us their thoughts on the game, as did Adrian Gantenbein and Youri Mulder.
Miron Muslic:
That was an outstanding win. We prepared the boys all week long for the fact that it would take a top-level performance. We didn’t let the early goal affect us and managed to take control and score a deserved equaliser. It was very even after that, until we received the harsh red card. It was a clear foul by Petkov on Ndiaye. We knew it would be tough against Elversberg, but as so often before, we accepted the situation and got our reward thanks to our incredible determination. We’ve always known Moussa Sylla to be a player for those big moments. We defended with everything we had after taking the lead. Fortune favours the brave and we managed to get over the line, despite the man disadvantage.
Vincent Wagner:
It’s a difficult one for us, but at the same time, congratulations to Schalke. We had the chances, but we just didn’t take them. We had opportunities to double the lead after we scored. You could feel Schalke growing into the game after that. The equaliser was an odd one and came when we had a player off the pitch. That’s when we realised we needed to up our game, at which point the game became more even. We started well after the break and Schalke were unfairly reduced to ten men – whether that helped us or not, I don’t know. We regularly created good chances against a team that defends really well. In the end, the fact that we couldn’t finish them meant that Schalke deserved the win.
Adrian Gantenbein:
We’re incredibly happy about this win, especially after being unfairly reduced to ten men. When you win a match like that against a top team, it gives you a reason to celebrate. Despite many absences, everyone in our squad gives everything, which is what brings us together as a team and has made us strong throughout the season. Now we’re only looking at Münster, who are still fighting relegation. If we don’t give 100% again, we won’t get anything out of that game, so we’re fully focused on it.
Youri Mulder:
The way we’re organised, our structure and our positioning was set up early within the first few months. Everyone who comes in knows exactly what they have to do. Going a man down obviously means you need to run more, but we managed it because we have a really fit squad – credit to the staff as well. Our strong individual quality fits well within our system. Moussa Sylla’s goal was really well taken – he’s clinical. You know that you’ll get fewer chances while at a man disadvantage, so it was even more important that he scored. No one gets jealous when they don’t play – we are a team. If someone doesn’t play, then someone else will – what’s important is that the team wins.
