Miron Muslic: My proudest moment of the past five months
After Schalke secured their third 1-0 home win in a row on Saturday (8/11), Miron Muslic talked about the hard-fought victory over third-placed Elversberg in the post-match press conference. The visitors’ head coach, Vincent Wagner, also spoke after the final whistle. In the Mixed Zone, Ron Schallenberg addressed the clash against the Saarland side. Read all the reaction to the game here.
Miron Muslic:
For me, it might be the proudest moment of the past five months. We’re over the moon with the performance and the win. When you think about how many injuries and suspensions we’ve had to deal with over the last few days and weeks and who was unavailable to us for this match against Elversberg, I’ve got to give massive credit to my team. The boys gave it their all again and defended everything against a team that is great in possession and that dominates other teams with their attack week in, week out.
We would have to suffer today – that much was clear. We tackled the challenge head on from the outset, though. Elversberg didn’t have any shots on goal. It shows that we defended well and partly mitigated the opponent’s quality. Every single player gives it 100% for us. It’s in our structure, our foundation.
Vincent Wagner:
FC Schalke 04 had to work hard to win. When all is said and done, I think they deserved it. It was clear to us beforehand that 65% possession wasn’t going to be enough. We probably needed about 70%, even though that sounds ambitious. But when you want to get something from a game here, you’ve got to do something incredibly well. Schalke were extremely well-organised at the back, as they have been in recent months. After going behind early on, it was unbelievably tough to play against them.
Ron Schallenberg:
Despite having a lot of absentees, we worked very well as a collective against quality opposition and, apart from one counterattack, hardly gave the best attack in the league any chances. It’s definitely a statement. Of course, it wasn’t the prettiest game for the fans but, as a defensive player, it felt great out there on the pitch. We were extremely solid – Nikola Katic did a great job leading the side again. I also want to shout out Mika Wallentowitz who played excellently in his first start. He’s come in from the U19s and played for the full 90 minutes. It’s a reflection of the great work that the academy does.
Now, we have the opportunity to take a breather because of the international break. We’ve already got 27 points after 12 games – it’s a good tally. We want to continue to work hard and get points until the winter so that we’re in a good position for the second half of the season.
