Miron Muslic: We have to settle for a point

After going 1-0 down, the Royal Blues fought back to draw 1-1 away at SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Saturday night (28/2) and took a point home with them. Afterwards, head coaches Miron Muslic and Heiko Vogel, as well as Youri Mulder, reflected on the match.

Miron Muslic clapping.

Miron Muslic:

We started the game really well, were incredibly sharp, managed a number of ball recoveries and created good chances. Then Fürth went in front with their first attacking move and the whole game changed, because at 1-0 they were obviously very comfortable and defended in a compact, structured and organised way. Even so, we created plenty of openings but didn’t make the most of them. We had chances in the second half as well, and we were also spared going 2-0 down by a very tight decision. In the end we needed a Premier League-style goal and Dejan delivered that for us. After that we wanted to seize the momentum and push for a winner, knowing full well that Fürth had brought on two dangerous counter-attacking players in Noel Futkeu and Felix Klaus. In the end, Fürth battled for this point and we didn’t take our chances. That shows you how tight every game in this league is and that you always have to be at your best. We have to settle for a point in the end.

Heiko Vogel:

A lot of our players were disappointed after the final whistle. Schalke obviously had more of the play, but we managed to defend well. What I have to criticise my team for is that we didn’t make enough of our time on the ball and we didn’t make our counter-attacks count either. That’s why we didn’t get a second goal. Then they equalised with a stunning strike and it turned into a pure battle of attrition, where we threw everything at it and Schalke also put absolutely everything in physically. Schalke showed why they’re deserved league leaders, and it also shows that we’re working well at the moment and have to fight for every point.

Youri Mulder:

At first glance it looks like we’ve dropped two points. But when you look at how the game unfolded and how we fought our way back into it, it’s a point gained for us. Of course we’re disappointed because we want to win games, and we could have won this one because we created so many chances. But we did a lot of things well, and you can see that it’s going to stay tight at both ends of the table right until the end of the season.
