Miron Muslic: Our strongest performance in recent weeks
FC Schalke 04 won 1-0 at home against SpVgg Greuther Fürth on Friday night (26/9). Miron Muslic and Fürth boss Thomas Kleine both agreed at the post-match press conference that the Royal Blues deserved all three points. Soufiane El-Faouzi also felt his team put in a dominant performance.
Miron Muslic:
I think that was our strongest performance in recent weeks. We not only had a clear plan, the right structure and organisation, but also showed dominance in every phase of the game. We were difficult to play against and very well prepared in possession. Even in the first half we did an excellent job and created chances. When we lost the ball, we were incredibly aggressive and used our Gegenpressing to stop Fürth’s attack from breaking forward.
The message at half-time was to keep a cool head and stick to our structure – one goal would come. We then created chances again in the second half without losing our defensive compactness. We fully deserved to take the lead. What happened in the last seven or eight minutes is what happens in every league in the world when it’s only 1-0. Our opponents threw everything at us, but we still kept a clean sheet and, apart from one header, didn’t allow them any opportunities to score. It was a very strong team performance.
Thomas Kleine:
It was a deserved win for Schalke. We’re not entirely satisfied with our performance today and weren’t able to repeat the strong display we produced in Bielefeld. We misplaced far too many passes and made a number of poor decisions, which made things easy for Schalke. With their fans behind them, they pinned us back. Even so, we went into the break with the game rather fortunately level. In one situation where we didn’t track properly, Schalke took a deserved lead. In the end we threw everything forward again, but only really woke up in the last 15 minutes.
Soufiane El-Faouzi:
We dominated the game from the first minute and created chances right from the start. At the back we were solid, apart from the closing stages when they had one or two opportunities. That’s when it turned into more of a battle. Our defence is in good shape, as we’ve shown over the past few weeks. Up front we can still be more clinical, but we had plenty of chances and knew that eventually a goal would come. Finn took his opportunity brilliantly.
