Kees van Wonderen: Two moments in which we switched off

FC Schalke 04 were left empty-handed after conceding twice late on against Hannover 96 on Friday evening (14/3). During the post-match press conference, head coach Kees van Wonderen and H96 coach André Breitenreiter reflected on the match, while Loris Karius and Marcin Kaminski spoke to the media from the mixed zone. schalke04.de have summed up all the post-match reaction following the defeat.

Kees van Wonderen:

We lost the game in a matter of minutes. I hadn’t expected that to happen still at the end of the game. It hurts and it’s a massive disappointment for all of us. Looking at the goals, they came from two moments in which we just switched off. We should have scored a second earlier on in order to put the game to bed, and had the chances to do so. With Janik Bachmann needing to come off and Marcin Kaminski also having been subbed off, we were lacking height to defend against Hannover’s dangerous set pieces, as we saw on the second goal. We were missing the luck that we’ve been able to earn over the last weeks. We’ll just have to continue on and now we have two weeks to prepare ourselves for the game in Fürth.

André Breitenreiter:

It was a very intense game over the course of the full 90 minutes. Schalke played well during the first half but only managed to create one big chance on goal, which they scored to make it 1-0. We had several moments in transition but failed to make the right decisions. We then went into the break trailing 1-0. It might not have been entirely undeserved, although the first half had been very evenly-match. The same was true in the second half. As the match went on, we managed to increase our pressure, but it didn’t result in any clear chances on goal. At that point, doubt starts to creep in. Schalke looked dangerous throughout and played well. In the end, it’s fair to say that luck was on our side, especially when you consider how late we scored our goals.

Loris Karius:

The last five minutes weren’t good. It was an entirely preventable defeat. That applies to me as well. I missed the ball while trying to punch it away on the second goal, which just can’t happen. I didn’t do the team any favours by doing that. We all should have been more focused at the end of the game. We’d already switched off a bit on the play that led to them making it 1-1. After winning two games in a row, we’re now heading into the international break on the back of a defeat. It doesn’t feel great because we had wanted to maintain our streak.

Marcin Kaminski:

We really wanted to take all three points. That’s why it’s extremely disappointing that we let our lead slip in the final minutes of the game. In the end, it’s a disappointing evening for us. On top of all that, I also picked up my fifth yellow card of the season and will be suspended for our next game in Fürth.
