Marcin Kaminski: The fans are always there to support us

Goals from Tomas Kalas and Kenan Karaman, plus a little bit of luck, ensured that the Royal Blues won 2-1 at Hertha BSC on Saturday afternoon (8/3). Following the victory in the capital city, Kees van Wonderen, Marcin Kaminski and Loris Karius all gave their thoughts.

Kees van Wonderen:

I’m proud to have had so many fans here today and I’m also proud of the team after they got the win. The players gave their best and we obviously had some luck on our side at the end there. You sometimes need a bit of luck, we’ve certainly not had it on other occasions this season. We didn’t start the second half well and let them attack us too much. We were fortunate that they didn’t score a second goal. We’ve now won consecutive matches for the first time this season and we’ll do all we can to get a third successive win against Hannover next Friday.

Stefan Leitl:

It was an even game and Schalke were the slightly better team in the first half. They got into good positions and caused us problems. We still managed to win back possession a lot in midfield but failed to make use of the space afforded to us. We weren’t able to find an equaliser in the first half but showed what we’re capable of after the break.

Marcin Kaminski:

Regardless of how we are playing, the fans are always there for us – their support gives us goosebumps. So many of them came to Berlin today, it felt like a home game. We’re so grateful for them. It wasn’t a perfect performance, but we got all three points in the end and we’re really happy about that. Hertha had four or five good chances in the second half, however sometimes you need a bit of luck and we had that today.

Loris Karius:

We started really well, controlled the game and went 1-0 up. We lost our way a bit in the second half but still gave 100%. The lads that came off the bench also tried their hardest, which was important. I’m proud of the guys and the team’s performance. Having so many Schalke fans here was incredible. Berlin isn’t just down the road. The fact that so many supporters made the long journey here and supported us from the first to the last minute was fantastic. I think everyone could see we were desperate to get the win for them today.
