Miron Muslic: A valuable point
FC Schalke 04 and Hertha BSC played out a goalless draw on Saturday evening (17/1) in the 2. Bundesliga. After the match at the Olympiastadion, both coaches reflected on the game, while Kenan Karaman, Hasan Kuruçay and Ron Schallenberg also shared their thoughts.
Miron Muslic:
We weren’t good going forward today, and you could also tell how much was at stake for Hertha. We had to suffer and defend, and that’s how we earned the point. It will prove valuable. I gave Loris a big hug after the game and told him how proud we are of him, he saved us today. He’s been playing really well for the last six to seven months. He’s a top-level performer and a leader. Now we want to win at home, with our fans behind us, driving us on.
Stefan Leitl:
I’m happy with the performance. We put in a very strong display at home and definitely could have won. In football, though, you don’t always get what you want. I can’t really fault my team today – in the end, there was a goalkeeper at the other end who was simply unbeatable.
Kenan Karaman:
That was anything but a good watch from us. For long spells we didn’t play the way we wanted to, both with or without the ball. In the second half we left far too much space, and Loris had to come up big a few times. We have the best goalkeeper in the league, but we can’t leave him that exposed. Hertha were always one step ahead of us and were able to dribble past us too easily at times. In the end we held on to the point, and that’s the only positive today. The fact that more than 20,000 Schalke fans were here again is incredible. We want to say a big thank you to everyone who made the trip, we really appreciate it. This togetherness is what we want to take into the next games.
Hasan Kuruçay:
We can be grateful for the point – it wasn’t one of our better performances. We’re in the middle of a process, we already have a good focus on defending and now want to keep developing our play with the ball. That takes time and doesn’t happen overnight. But we stick together, fight for each other and act as a unit. People in Germany can now again see what Schalke stands for – now we have to keep pushing that process forward.
Ron Schallenberg:
It’s a fortunate point for us. We probably couldn’t have complained if they had won tonight. In the end we’re the happier side with the result. We’ll take the point, but we know we need to raise our performance levels again and that’s our main focus now. We’ve got another full week of training to get even more intensity into our legs.
