Karel Geraerts: We pushed for a goal in the second half

The two head coaches, Karel Geraerts and Tim Walter of Hamburger SV, reflected on HSV’s 2-0 win on Saturday night (20/1) at the post-match press conference together. Goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann and captain Simon Terodde also spoke to the media after the game at the VELTINS-Arena.

Karel Geraerts:

The first half was really close. The difference between the sides was that Hamburg took their chances and that shows their quality. We defended both of their goals badly. We pushed for a goal to get us back into the game in the second half, but fine margins denied us as we hit the post and the bar. Overall, I’m satisfied with my team’s performance, although some of our players didn’t play to their best. We fought hard against a good team.

Tim Walter:

I think we played really well in the first half. We were dangerous on the break and scored two nice goals. We had to defend a number of corners in the second half. I’m really pleased with my team overall.

Ralf Fährmann:

The result doesn’t fully reflect the run of play across the 90 minutes. We hit the woodwork three times for example, and had a number of other chances and good moves in their half. We need to turn a performance like that into points and failed to do so tonight. I don’t want to blame it on luck, that’d be too simple. Hamburg took their chances this evening. They were clinical and showed their quality.

Simon Terodde:

The first half wasn’t quite good enough by us. There were a few close calls, like when we hit the bar and post. We unfortunately couldn’t get a goal back, which would have got us right in the game. We wanted to pick up where we left off at the end of last year. Tonight is definitely a small setback, but we need to draw a line under it and stick together as a team.
