S04 come from two goals down to pick up a point in Hamburg

FC Schalke 04 drew 2-2 away at Hamburger SV on Saturday night (23/11). The hosts were 2-0 up at the break thanks to goals from Marco Richter and Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, but Amin Younes and Kenan Karaman were on target in the second half to turn the game around.

One change to the team

Head coach Kees van Wonderen made one change to the team that beat SSV Jahn Regensburg 2-0 in the last league game. Tobias Mohr, who sustained a thigh injury in training at the start of the week, was replaced by Janik Bachmann in the starting XI.

Two goals in as many minutes for Hamburg

The hosts controlled the game early on, though Schalke’s defence was solid and kept things tight. The Royal Blues grew into the match after around 10 minutes and it developed into more of an even affair.

It took a while for both teams to threaten in the final third. Justin Heekeren was called into action for the first time in the 20th minute – he had no problems with Noah Katterbach’s curling effort.

A set piece provided the breakthrough for the Rothosen with almost half an hour played. Marco Richter scored a free-kick from around 20 yards out to give the hosts the lead. They then added a second a minute later, this time via Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer. He capitalised on a misplaced pass by Ron Schallenberg, took it past Heekeren and fired into an empty net from a few yards out.

Schalke were clearly knocked back by this double blow and it almost got even worse too. Davie Selke came close to HSV’s third a few minutes later, but Max Grüger managed to deny him a goal from Richter’s cross (34’). S04’s brightest moment in the first half came five minutes before the end. Derry John Murkin flashed the ball across the six-yard box, however Moussa Sylla couldn’t get on the end of it.

Younes and Karaman earn Schalke a point

Less than two minutes after the restart, Justin Heekeren was quick off his line to deny Davie Selke’s attempt with his legs. At the other end of the pitch, Amin Younes pulled a shot just wide (55’).

Schalke were slowly building up some real pressure on the Hamburg goal and their efforts were soon rewarded. Max Grüger’s cross bounced off Sebastian Schonlau perfectly for Amin Younes and he slotted it past Daniel Heuer Fernandes to get S04 back in the game (57’).

Moussa Sylla was celebrating an equaliser five minutes later, albeit not for long. The striker was in an offside position when he scored and referee Wolfgang Haslberger quickly ruled it out. Derry John Murkin was the next Schalker to try his luck, shooting narrowly wide from 18 yards out (67’). Some sections of the home crowd believed they had a third goal two minutes after that, however Marco Richter’s strike had only hit the side-netting.

Kenan Karaman eventually got Schalke’s deserved equaliser in the 74th minute. Paul Seguin slipped Janik Bachmann in behind and he crossed for the captain, who slid in to level proceedings. The 30-year-old could have put Schalke ahead too moments later, but this time his attempt went wide (78’).

The Knappen had Justin Heekeren to thank on two occasions in the closing stages. He firstly made a fine save from Silvan Hefti’s drive (82’) and then got the better of him again two minutes before full time, ensuring Schalke came away with a 2-2 draw, a positive result after the state of play at half time.

At home against the Red Devils

Schalke’s matchday 14 fixture is at home against 1. FC Kaiserslautern. The match will be played on Friday (29/11) at 18:30 CET.

Paul Seguin: Dictating the play

During Sunday’s (10/11) 2-0 home win over SSV Jahn Regensburg, Paul Seguin played 127 passes, by far the most of any player on the pitch. He completed 94% of them, including the pass to Tobias Mohr before he assisted Kenan Karaman’s opening goal. “I felt really comfortable in my role,” he said, rather unsurprisingly.
