Kees van Wonderen: We didn’t defend well enough in some moments

S04 suffered a 2-1 defeat to 1. FC Kaiserslautern. After the game, head coach Kees van Wonderen and FCK boss Torsten Lieberknecht gave their thoughts, as did Justin Heekeren and Janik Bachmann. Here’s all the reaction from the match.

Head coach Kees van Wonderen:

“After the equaliser in the second half, the match could have gone either way. We didn’t defend well enough in some moments though. That was the big difference. Having said that, the lads, including the players who came on, gave everything until the end, and the fans provided great support once again. In the end, the opponents’ individual quality decided the game. Now, we have to analyse the mistakes we made together with the team, and then start this short week of training ahead of an important home match against Paderborn.”

Torsten Lieberknecht:

“For us, today was about ending a bad run, and in the short term, changing one or two things so we could play with a bit more simplicity. I think you could see that today. It was important for me to get a certain feeling through to the team, so I’m not only pleased with the win, but also the fact that we created good chances and were successful.”

Justin Heekeren:

“You could see just how even this league is. Often, it’s just how you present on the day that’s the difference between a win and a loss. After the equaliser, I briefly thought we were now in control, because Kaiserslautern seemed to be tiring a bit. We then twice conceded goals to make it 2-1, and we let that knock the wind out of us. We did show spirit again today though. We’re disappointed with the defeat in the end, but now, we need to focus on the home game against Paderborn and getting something there.”

Janik Bachmann:

“We had prepared for Kaiserslautern to play a lot of long balls to try and get in behind the defence. We shouldn’t have conceded like that. We didn’t defend well for the goals. We fought back with the equaliser, but at the end of the day, we should have done better, and the result is fair. The performance was okay, but we defended too naively sometimes and we can’t be satisfied with that. We have to keep working on improving our game in the final third and playing along the ground as well as from crosses.”
