Miron Muslic: As long as the final whistle hasn’t gone, anything can still happen

After a number of late goals, Sunday’s game (25/1) between FC Schalke 04 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern ended 2-2 at the VELTINS-Arena. Miron Muslic and Torsten Lieberknecht reflected on the result after full time, while Kenan Karaman and Zaid Tchibara also shared their thoughts.

Miron Muslic:

Today’s game was an emotional ride. When you go 2-0 down in the 84th minute, you know how hard it’s going to be. But we showed real character, kept believing and pulled one back through Edin Džeko. His piece of brilliance changed everything for us – it lifted the stadium and gave us the belief to go throw everything at them. Up until then, the game was very even. Kaiserslautern handled a lot of things well, but we should have defended their diagonal balls better. If Timo Becker had scored from the corner in the second half, the game would have gone completely differently. Instead, Ivan Prtajin came on and scored with his first touch. In the end, the way we finished the game gives us energy and confidence. It shows that as long as the final whistle hasn’t gone, anything is possible. We had this belief today and earned ourselves a point.

Torsten Lieberknecht:

If you’re leading 2-0 at Schalke and still don’t win, it’s only natural to feel disappointed – at least at first. But that shouldn’t take away from how well we played away from home. We caused Schalke problems defensively and scored two goals that would usually be enough. But here, just like in Kaiserslautern, the stadium can create the kind of momentum that can turn a game. Schalke managed to claw their way back from set pieces.

Kenan Karaman:

The point is important for our confidence. After a game that already felt lost, we’ll happily take that result. It felt like there could have been more in it for us today, even though there were phases where we weren’t good enough. Shortly after our chance through Timo Becker, Kaiserslautern scored from a set piece and then hit us on the counter. But we responded really well thanks to Edin’s class, created another chance and still managed to equalise. In the end, both sides can be satisfied with the result.

Zaid Tchibara:

It was a great feeling to be back after such a long time. Late on, I didn’t think I’d still get on, until the coach called my name. Then it was about giving everything in those final minutes. With my header before the equaliser, I was able to help the team. After passing my driving test this week, that made the moment even more special for me.

Loris Karius: It’s not about the table, it’s about what we demand of ourselves

Loris Karius was without doubt the man of the hour (and-a-half) as FC Schalke 04 picked up a point at the Olympiastadion on Saturday night (17/1), making a number of crucial saves to secure a clean sheet in Berlin. For the 32-year-old shot-stopper, though, his own performance against Hertha BSC took a backseat in his post-match analysis.
