Karate Kid was Mehmet Can Aydin’s inspiration for his first goal

Mehmet Can Aydin will remember this goal for the rest of the life. His spectacular scissor kick directly from a Thomas Ouwejan corner made it 2-0 in the home game against FC Ingolstadt 04 on Sunday (3/10). The 19-year-old’s stunning strike will certainly be in contention for ‘Goal of the Month’ – and it was his first competitive goal for Schalke’s first team.

“I haven’t yet got my head around what happened today. I’ll probably only be able to comprehend it when I watch the goal back tonight,” said Aydin after the full-time whistle against Ingolstadt with a big grin on his face. The right-back couldn’t put his delight into words after the match, whilst also revealed how a cult film from the 1980s inspired his goal. “I saw this kick in Karate Kid and thought I’d try it in a game – and it worked!” The goal came in the 65th minute to make it 2-0. Aydin met Thomas Ouwejan’s corner on the volley, producing a crazy scissor kick midair which thundered in underneath the crossbar.

Aydin: Simon deserves his record

Aydin was fairly satisfied with the way the game went against Ingolstadt, although he also stated that the away side did cause Schalke some problems in the first half. “We were better after the break, pressed them and scored three nice goals,” commented Aydin. The 3-0 win also saw another landmark moment, as Simon Terodde netted his 153rd second-division goal to equal Dieter Schatzschneider’s all-time record. “We were expecting Simon to score today considering he does in almost every game,” praised Aydin. “I’ve never seen anyone as clinical as him. He deserves this record.”

After a second successive win and 12 points from the last five league games, the Royal Blues are now up to fourth in the table. “We’re happy about that. Our aim remains to continue climbing the table,” stated Aydin, who added: “We have to back up this performance now.”
