Miron Muslic: We believed the goal would come
The Royal Blues beat Karlsruher SC 1-0 on Sunday (5/4). Speaking after the game, head coaches Miron Muslic and Christian Eichner shared their thoughts at the post-match press conference, while Kenan Karaman and Ron Schallenberg also gave their reaction in the Mixed Zone.
Miron Muslic:
We had an outstanding shape out of possession today. We didn’t really allow KSC a single chance, which is exceptional given the quality they have, both as a team and as individuals. The 124 kilometres we covered also shows the intensity and aggression we brought without the ball, as well as the passion we played with. On top of that excellent defensive display, we had 24 shots. We knew we would need patience in attack today, and we showed that as well. We also had the belief that, if we kept playing the way we were, the goal would come. I’m very happy with the win and the three points.
Christian Eichner:
Over the 90 minutes, Schalke showed what they have added since the winter break: quality, and even more quality. You could see it in the finer details of their play, and you could see it with the goal as well. On top of that, the team have rediscovered their hunger for defending and their work without the ball. It took us a while to get into the match at all. Our main problem over the 90 minutes was that we were far too sloppy going forward. As a result, my team had to spend a lot of time defending. In the end, the pressure became too much and the winning goal followed.
Kenan Karaman:
For the goal, I gambled on the cross coming to the near post. Moussa Ndiaye put the ball exactly there, I made a good connection and it flew in. The goal was a real relief, but we had already played well before that. We spent a lot of time in their box today. Some games need patience, though. The team moved the ball well and, when that opening finally came, we took it. After that, we saw the game out. What makes the difference for us is how together we are as a team, and that showed today.
Ron Schallenberg:
I thought it was a fully deserved win. It was a really good game because it felt like we were really in control. We should have scored more goals, but with the result we got today, that doesn’t matter. We basically didn’t let them create any chances – Hasan Kuruçay and Timo Becker really stepped up and took responsibility. I’m really pleased with the performance. Whenever someone is missing, the lads who come in always deliver. That’s why I’m also feeling very positive about the next few weeks.
