Miron Muslic: We will regroup and focus on what’s ahead
Following the 1-0 defeat at home to Holstein Kiel on Saturday afternoon (13/9), head coach Miron Muslic and his opposite number Marcel Rapp discussed the close game at the post-match press conference. Schalke captain Kenan Karaman also gave his thoughts after the final whistle.
Miron Muslic:
It was an even game. I think we started well, with Moussa Sylla’s one-on-one chance the best opportunity in the opening 15 minutes. We had the chance to take the lead against a strong opponent and unfortunately failed to take it. After a goal kick from the visitors, Kiel won the ball back from a diagonal pass. They immediately switched play again, driving diagonally and vertically at pace, and made it 1-0 with a deflected shot. We still had two or three decent chances to equalise in the first half, while Kiel were still dangerous from counter-attacks.
We started the second half brightly, but we lacked a cutting edge in the final third today. Kiel also defended brilliantly, particularly from set pieces. Adrian Gantenbein’s shot in injury time, which was blocked just before the line, summed up our fortunes. We failed to get the goal today. We are obviously disappointed after losing at home, which is normal. We will regroup and focus on what’s ahead.
Marcel Rapp:
After a bad performance last time out, we set out to improve and take a step in the right direction. The lads did just that right from the first whistle. Our goal naturally helped us settle into the game. Our defence kept things pretty tight after that. The lads played with passion and now need to back this performance up next week.
Kenan Karaman:
We didn’t play badly. We had chances to score both early on in the first half and to equalise just before the break. We started the second half well and had a good period of pressure without really threatening. Kiel didn’t create that many chances. Nobody would have said we didn’t deserve a point if we had scored at the end. We need to learn from today’s defeat and make sure we do better in Magdeburg.
