Kees van Wonderen: We defended badly in a number of situations

Head coach Kees van Wonderen, FCM boss Christian Titz and Ron Schallenberg spoke to the media after 1. FC Magdeburg’s 5-2 win on Saturday night (1/2).

Kees van Wonderen:

Magdeburg are doing some great work. They have a style of play that is tough to play against. We knew that tonight would be a really tough game and that small moments could decide it. Those moments went against us this evening – we defended badly in a number of situations. Martijn Kaars kept on finding space by running in behind our defence and that’s how they beat us tonight. We need to accept it, we’re disappointed, but we can’t dwell on it. We need to learn how to keep on going after a run of successful games.

Christian Titz:

It was a convincing win, but we still came up against a strong team, who challenged us with their pressing and their play on the ball. We knew that Schalke would play with a high line and that we could play balls in behind their back line – the lads did that fantastically well tonight. We knew Schalke wouldn’t give up, so it was good that we never let up and saw the win home.

Ron Schallenberg:

The main reason for our defeat tonight was not keeping Martijn Kaars quiet and failing to stop their balls in behind our defence. It didn’t feel like the game was as one-sided as the scoreline suggests. Their striker was on another level this evening and he made the difference. We fully deserved to lose, but could have also created chances of our own. Our defence was the problem tonight, not the attack. I don’t think we’ve undone all the good work we’ve done in recent weeks. We’re obviously massively disappointed, but we know what went wrong and tonight has just shown that every game will be tough if we don’t perform to our best. I’m confident that we’ll fare better again in the coming weeks.
