Mehmet Can Aydin: I can’t wait for the Ingolstadt game!

His assist for the second goal in the 2-0 win at Rostock was Mehmet Can Aydin’s first goal contribution in his 13th game in professional football for the Royal Blues. The Schalke academy product was impressive at the Ostseestadion, not just because of his assist. The 19-year-old got up and down the right side all night, and was rewarded for his performance with a spot in German magazine Kicker’s Team of the Week.

“I gave my all and I’m happy that a few things came off,” said Aydin, who brilliantly took down a long ball from Dominick Drexler, beat his man and then instead of shooting, had the awareness to pick out Simon Terodde in the six-yard box and he made it 2-0 with his second of the night.

There were big celebrations after the goal for the Royal Blues, and the goalscorer Terodde knew exactly who to thank for his 10th of the season. “Memo could have shot himself, but played it to me instead,” praised the striker. Aydin not only celebrated the goal with his teammates, but also with Mike Büskens on the touchline too.

Pleased about the coach’s trust

The youngster has a special relationship with S04’s assistant coach. “He’s helped and supported me since my first day, including giving me regular tips and advice. We’ve got a great relationship both on and off the pitch. He’s always got time to talk with me about things, not just regarding football,” revealed Aydin.

The Germany youth international also stated how pleased he was when head coach Dimitrios Grammozis told him he was going to be starting in Rostock. “I trained really hard, so it’s nice to have the coach’s confidence,” said Aydin, who wasn’t worried by the atmosphere at the Ostseestadion. “I haven’t played in front of a crowd like that very often. The atmosphere actually gave me an additional boost.” Saturday’s win was “really important and great,” according to the right-back. “I’m now looking forward to Sunday and I can’t wait for the Ingolstadt game at the VELTINS-Arena.”
