Tobias Mohr: We did exactly what we’d set out to do
Tobias Mohr made his comeback from injury on Saturday (25/1), playing a key part in Schalke’s 3-1 win against 1. FC Nürnberg. The 29-year-old provided two assists and served for constant danger on the left flank, together with Anton Donkor, who also contributed an assist.

Head coach Kees van Wonderen was forced to make two changes to his side ahead of the clash with Nürnberg, with Donkor and Mohr coming into the team in place of Derry John Murkin (ankle) and Christopher Antwi-Adjei (thigh). The change bore fruit, with the two wide players involved in all three of the Royal Blues’ goals.
The opening goal was a co-production between Kenan Karaman and Mohr, with the striker finishing off his free kick in the seventh minute. Just eight minutes later, Moussa Sylla doubled Schalke’s lead after a beautiful assist from Donkor. “There’s no better way to start a game,” Mohr said afterwards. “We did exactly what we’d set out to do: have one person make the run into space, while the other stays behind. Linking up with Kenan also worked out perfectly.” Mohr added that it’s important to have teammates that are constantly working to follow up the ball. “This helps to create space and allows us to play long balls. Anton and Derry are two similar players and they both make it easy for me out on the pitch.”
We would do well to continue taking it game by game.
The win against FCN has extended Schalke’s unbeaten run to five league matches, a streak which includes three wins. This positive series of results has only helped to grow the team’s confidence, with Mohr adding: “If you’re able to bring this confidence to the pitch without being arrogant, then it doesn’t only result in a respectable performance but also helps us look more stable on the pitch. We know what we need to do and that gives us security.”
The three points earned against FCN will also have had an impact on the table, with Schalke able to grow the gap over the automatic relegation spots. However, Mohr warns against getting too far ahead of themselves just yet. “We would do well to continue taking it game by game,” he said. “Everyone is capable of beating anyone in this league. Our goal is to continue making progress.”
Mohr also has personal goals he hopes to achieve this season still. The midfielder is hoping to improve on his current personal best of 15 goal involvements in a single Bundesliga 2 campaign. It’s a realistic goal, given that he has currently already had a hand in nice goals in 2024/25.
