Moussa Sylla: All the players want more

After missing two games due to injury, Moussa Sylla returned to face SSV Jahn Regensburg and immediately got himself on the scoresheet to make it 2-0, the final scoreline at the VELTINS-Arena. Despite that win, Sylla wasn’t unhappy about it being followed directly by an international break, allowing him and the team to recharge the batteries ahead of the trip to Hamburger SV this Saturday (23/11).

“Sometimes you need a break to regroup and then improve,” explained the striker. Sylla and his teammates have five difficult matches after the international break before the end of 2024, but Schalke’s number 9 is excited: “They are good matches.”

The forward is particularly looking forward to the away game at the Volksparkstadion: “We’re waiting for our next game,” he said. “We’re ready for Hamburger SV.” The Royal Blues are hoping for a second consecutive victory in the league this weekend. “It’s always better when you’ve got more points on the board. All the players want more.”

Everyone can beat everyone in this league, which is why we need to be more focused in every game and take each match as it comes.

Sylla added: “Everyone can beat everyone in this league, which is why we need to be more focused in every game and take each match as it comes.” This approach was successful against Regensburg and the Mali international played a big role in the victory. After returning to the starting XI, he bundled in Tobias Mohr’s deflected shot from just a few yards out straight after the break.

Seven goals so far this season

Ben Manga, the club’s director for squad planning, scouting and the academy, had some nice words for the attacker before the Regensburg fixture. “He told me before the game that we need you,” revealed the 24-year-old. “He then praised me for my performance after the match.”

His goal against Regensburg was already his seventh for S04, making him the third-top goalscorer in the 2. Bundesliga this season, though that’s not something the summer signing is focusing on. “I would like to score lots of goals, that’s my job as a striker. I’d gladly finish the season as the league’s top goalscorer, but it’s not something that I have to achieve. My aim is to help the team and pay back the club’s faith in me.”
