Miron Muslic: Stuck to our principles and played really well as a team

Head coach Miron Muslic, his opposite number Alois Schwartz, as well as Loris Karius and Timo Becker all gave their thoughts after Schalke’s 4-1 home win over Preußen Münster on Sunday (19/4).

Miron Muslic clapping.

Miron Muslic:

We stuck to our principles and played really well as a team. In a game between first and bottom, things can happen if you lose your shape, but we did exactly the opposite and deserved to win. I thought we were very strong in possession and outstanding in our counter-press. We had 12 shots in the first half, which says a lot about our intensity. Staying patient was a very important factor today. We had two or three big chances in the opening few minutes and knew that if we kept creating opportunities at that rate and maintained the pressure, the opener would come – and it did.

We kept pushing after that because this team never settles. The second goal before half time was incredibly important. Our mindset after that was to go for the third and not sit back. The lads carried that out brilliantly. All in all, it was an excellent performance and we fully deserved to keep the three points at home.

Alois Schwartz:

The gap between Schalke and Münster is huge at the moment and you could see that out on the pitch today. We didn’t start the game well and Schalke pinned us back. Then we rode our luck once when the ball went just wide, plus Johannes Schenk made two very good saves. Just as the game had settled down a little, we made a mistake playing out from the back and Schalke punished us ruthlessly. Then we conceded from a set piece just before the break, so it was 2-0. Once they made it 3-0, the game was over. It was nice that we still got a goal, but that doesn’t count for much when you concede four times.

Loris Karius:

It was a fairly quiet afternoon for me because the lads did a really good job for most of the game. It was only in the final few minutes that we let our standards slip a bit, and that’s something we still need to work on. It was a goal we shouldn’t be giving away. Apart from that, though, we did well. We imposed ourselves from the first minute and didn’t take anything for granted just because of the table. Everyone was fully switched on – and if we hadn’t been, it would have been difficult even against Münster. But when we play like that, we’re a very tough side for anyone to face here. Now we travel to Paderborn with respect, but also full of belief. Of course, we want to win there too.

Timo Becker:

We knew it would be a tricky game because Münster sit very deep. We had our problems against teams like that earlier in the season, but we analysed them well and produced a brilliant home performance. This time we also took our chances, so unlike against Karlsruhe it never got nervy late on. There are still a few games to come, so now we have to focus on the next one.

We need to play well in every game – regardless of who our opponents are,” said the Royal Blues’ head coach.
