Sylla scores twice as S04 come from behind to win 2-1 in Münster

First start for Bulut, Grüger’s professional debut

Interim coach Jakob Fimpel made two changes to the team: U17 European champion Taylan Bulut replaced Marcin Kaminski to make his first start in the league, while Max Grüger celebrated his professional debut. The Germany youth international took Christopher Antwi-Adjei’s place in the XI.

Lino Tempelmann was in the squad for the first time this season after his injury. The 25-year-old was on the bench alongside Tim Albutat from the U23s. The captain of the club’s reserves had trained with the first team all week due to several absentees in midfield.

Grodowski’s goal ruled out for offside

The home team enjoyed the slightly better start to the game. Despite Schalke having more possession, Preußen Münster had the first few shots of the evening.  Charalambos Makridis (3’) and Joshua Mees (5’) both shot wide on their left foot from the edge of the box. The Royal Blues improved as the first half went on and recorded their first attempt in the 14th minute. Derry John Murkin’s cross from the left was headed over the bar by Moussa Sylla.

The two teams didn’t take too many risks and that meant most of the game was played in the middle of the park. Former Schalke player Daniel Kyerewaa saw a header of his own go over from Jano Ter Horst’s cross (27’).

The ball was in the back of the Schalke net with just over an hour played. Joel Grodowski was the scorer, however he was in an offside position when he received the ball. Referee Dr. Robin Braun correctly gave it offside, though VAR still checked the incident for several minutes, eventually confirming it would remain 0-0.

As the first half drew to a close, Schalke had a couple of bright moments in attack. Kenan Karaman passed to Amin Younes and he eventually got a shot off after initially taking too long, but his effort was blocked by Lukas Frenkert (41’). In injury time, Tobias Mohr struck a shot just over the bar from range.

Schalke come from behind

SCP had a decent chance less than 60 seconds into the second half: Charalambos Makridis got his head on the end of a Grodowski cross, with Heekeren flying out his goal and doing enough to put him off as the ball went over the bar. The home fans were able to celebrate an opening goal a few minutes later, however. Torge Paetow’s long ball was headed by Mehmet Can Aydin into Taylan Bulut and it unluckily fell for Makridis, who left Heekeren with no chance from within the box (53’).

The hosts aimed to score again as Schalke searched for an equaliser, which they duly found in the 67th minute. Johannes Schenk couldn’t hold on to Aydin’s strike from the edge of the box and Moussa Sylla reacted quickly to pop in the rebound for 1-1.

The Mali international soon followed his fifth goal of the season with his sixth, though not a goal that will go down as his finest. As he tried to clear the ball, defender Lukas Frenkert kicked it into the chest of Sylla and the ball looped up over Schenk and rolled into the back of the net (74’). Just a minute later, Münster could have made it 2-2. Substitute Thorben Deters headed it down to Joel Grodowski, whose volley went just wide.

Justin Heekeren was again called into action in the 76th minute, keeping Jano Ter Horst at bay following a corner. Preußen pushed hard for a leveller late on and had Schalke penned in their own half, but the Royal Blues held firm and secured their first away win of the season.

Hertha at home

Schalke’s next game is against Hertha BSC. The side from the capital are visitors to the VELTINS-Arena next Saturday (5/10), again at 20:30 CEST.
