Ron Schallenberg: We will make it hard for any team playing with that intensity

The Royal Blues secured a 3-1 victory over 1. FC Nürnberg in their first home game of the year on Saturday (25/1). We heard from the two head coaches, Kees van Wonderen and Miroslav Klose, and Ron Schallenberg after the match.

Kees van Wonderen:

We’re very happy with the result. It was a difficult game, as Nürnberg played really well and caused us some real problems. It felt like a bit of a chaotic game for me on the sidelines; we didn’t have much control. We managed to apply good pressure to our opponents early on and got our goals at the right time. There were some great individual performances out there today too, like Ron Schallenberg. The team have now got a sense of what we want to do with and without the ball. However, we have to be critical today, because we gave away too many chances, but we’re still happy to have come away with the win. Now we have another tough game against Magdeburg and will need to put a good plan together in the coming week.

Miroslav Klose:

Congrats to Schalke on their win. It was a good game to watch. Schalke were more clinical in the first half. They created some good chances, and our positional play suffered a lot dealing with their switching of play. We didn’t get going in the first 20 minutes. We left too much space and weren’t aggressive enough. The atmosphere in the stadium also plays a role. We had pictured the start very differently. It wasn’t until we went 2-0 down that we found some courage and started playing out from the back more, but then we went and conceded a cheap third goal because we just stood still. You can’t afford to do that at Schalke. I was very happy with the second half though. We made our opponents do a lot of running and were able to lure them into counter-attacking situations, but we didn’t create enough shooting opportunities. However, we will continue along this path and can learn from games like these.

Ron Schallenberg:

Both teams wanted to keep the ball on the floor today and it’s quite difficult to deal with Nürnberg’s approach, so that probably was why the game was a little hectic at times. Nevertheless, we can be happy today. We attacked really well in the first half and got the goals we needed. We’re more stable in general at the moment – we’ve only lost one of our last nine games and play with more cohesion and compactness. Everyone is fighting for each other and we will make it hard for any team playing with that intensity.
