Kees van Wonderen: The win was a team effort

After the final whistle on Friday (6/12), both Kees van Wonderen and Paderborn head coach Lukas Kwasniok agreed that the Royal Blues were the deserved victors away to the league leaders. Double-scoring Kenan Karaman and midfielder Ron Schallenberg felt the same. schalke04.de has the reactions of these four.

Kees van Wonderen:

Winning away at the league leaders is a great result. The team totally deserved it for their performance. After the painful defeat to Kaiserslautern, we showed a different side of ourselves and reacted perfectly. Every single player gave their all, so I don’t want to single anyone out in particular for praise. The win was a team effort.

We managed to put the opponents under pressure and show our qualities on the pitch. Our plan worked overall. We reacted well to going behind early. We fought and stuck together. There was only one little spell after half time when we were a bit sloppy. Other than that though, we can be very pleased with how we played.

Lukas Kwasniok:

Schalke deserved to win the game. We showed good mentality, but our opponents did too, and they also showed their quality. They were the better team, and particularly in the first half were winning all of the individual battles. We were too passive without the ball and in attack, and were not at the right level defensively. If Schalke played like that every week, they would be right up there in this division. In my opinion, this was by far the best any opponent has played against us this season. We now have to work on some things from this game and get back to our previous performance level next week. Today, we were left with no chance.

Kenan Karaman:

I’m very pleased and happy about how this evening went. We were fired up for the 90 minutes from the start. We were also well-prepared, because the coach had set us up well. I have to compliment the whole team for putting in this kind of performance after the disappointment against Kaiserslautern. We got stuck into the challenges and were clinical in front of goal. In the end, it was a richly deserved away win against the league leaders. I’m delighted most of all for our fans, who gave us incredible support again. We now have to make sure that we deliver a performance like this in every match.

Ron Schallenberg:

We’ve got a deserved three points against one of the best teams in the 2. Bundesliga. We defended compactly, fought for all of the second balls in midfield and won a lot of important individual battles. We were equally good in attack. When the lads have the ball in a forward position, it’s not easy to get it off them.
