Karel Geraerts: My team showed mental strength

Following Schalke’s 2-0 win over 1. FC Nürnberg on Saturday (13/4), Karel Geraerts, FCN head coach Cristian Fiél and Yusuf Kabadayi spoke about the clash at the VELTINS-Arena.

Karel Geraerts:

I watched a very good first-half performance from my Schalke team. If I was to criticise one thing, it would be that we should’ve scored more goals in the first 45, since we created a lot of good chances. Nürnberg showed that they have a lot of quick, skilful players when they hit us on the break. The second half was tight. Unfortunately, we didn’t score the penalty. At the end of the day, both teams had their chances. My team showed mental strength. There’s been a lot of pressure on us this past week. Congratulations to my players – they fought hard to get the three points.

Cristian Fiél:

When you want to get something from a game against Schalke, you’ve got to take all the chances you get. We didn’t do that today. Instead, we made individual errors that should never happen. We’ve talked about it a lot. It goes without saying that it’s not easy playing here when you’re behind. The second goal was the decider. I’m assuming that 37 points will be enough to stay in the league. Regardless of that, we still want to win games. If we want to do that, we need to work hard. Now, we’re going to do everything we can to get some points against Paderborn back in Nuremberg.

Yusuf Kabadayi:

You could see from the first minute onwards that we were playing as a team. Before the second goal, I noticed that the defender wanted to push me out wide, so I cut inside. It was impossible for the goalkeeper to gather the ball cleanly due to the nature of the shot and Paul put the rebound away. We can enjoy today, but we’ll be back working hard on Monday with Elversberg in our sights. If we play like we did today and like we did in Hannover, I’ll be happy.
