Kees van Wonderen: Our plan worked from the start

Head coach Kees van Wonderen and his Regensburg counterpart Andreas Patz analysed the match during their joint post-match press conference on Sunday (10/11). S04 captain Kenan Karaman also spoke about the 2-0 win from the mixed zone. Read on for all the key quotes on schalke04.de.

Kees van Wonderen:

Our plan worked, right from the start. We scored our goals at the right time. We were lucky that Moussa Sylla wasn’t offside when he made it 2-0, which is what you need sometimes. This win represents the first step, in my opinion. We now need to continue on. I’m pleased that the work that we’ve been putting in for several weeks has now resulted in a positive result. It was important for the players, the staff and the fans. It will help give us the momentum that we need.

Andreas Patz:

We’d set out to achieve more today and really wanted to take points home with us. We conceded a goal in the first half after failing to mark Kenan Karaman closely enough. We made some changes at halftime and were better from then on, but then conceded a second at a bad moment in time. We just weren’t direct enough in finishing our moves in that moment. Overall, we were lacking bravery, especially in attack.

Kenan Karaman:

I’m very happy that we’ve managed to win an important game like this. We were really dominant today, which is what we spent all week working towards. Our defence was solid and we looked for space to open up in attack, and then ended up scoring at the right moments. We knew ahead of the game that we would have plenty of possession, which we then took advantage of to dominate our opponents. It feels good to have kept back-to-back clean sheets, in addition to having won. After the international break, we’ll have five games left to play before the winter break. We want to pick up as many points as possible from these games in order to distance ourselves from the bottom as quickly as possible.

Paul Seguin: Dictating the play

During Sunday’s (10/11) 2-0 home win over SSV Jahn Regensburg, Paul Seguin played 127 passes, by far the most of any player on the pitch. He completed 94% of them, including the pass to Tobias Mohr before he assisted Kenan Karaman’s opening goal. “I felt really comfortable in my role,” he said, rather unsurprisingly.
