Peter Remmert: The craziest way I’ve ever set up a goal
Friday night’s (1/8) opening game of the new 2. Bundesliga season against Hertha BSC could hardly have gone any better for youngster Peter Remmert. The striker was handed his first start for the club and assisted the opening goal in a 2-1 win. The only thing that was missing for the 20-year-old was a goal for himself at the sold-out VELTINS-Arena – and he actually missed a good chance for his maiden first-team goal just before the break.
The forward played just 25 minutes for the first team last season, mainly featuring for Schalke’s U23 side in the fourth tier as he looked to gain valuable match practice and continue his development following his move from VfL Osnabrück’s academy.
Remmert had impressed during the six weeks of pre-season with his goals and commitment out on the pitch, earning him a start on the opening night against the ‘Old Lady’. Remmert began alongside Christopher Antwi-Adjei as part of a 3-4-2-1 formation behind the lone striker, Moussa Sylla. “I’m extremely grateful for the coach’s faith in me. I had an idea that I would be in the starting XI the day before the game and I was then certain I would be after our final training session,” said the 20-year-old.
I’m extremely grateful for the coach’s faith in me.
Remmert took full advantage of the opportunity handed to him, winning a number of balls in the final third and setting up the opening goal. According to the ex-Osnabrück man, his assist in the 16th minute was “the craziest way I’ve ever set up a goal.” Following a battle with defender Marton Dardai, Remmert fell to the ground before keeping his composure to play it to Moussa Sylla while still on the floor. “I didn’t hear a whistle and spotted Moussa. I just tried to slide tackle the ball to him and it worked!” revealed the 20-year-old.
Schalke’s number 39 almost scored himself with 40 minutes played. Adrian Gantenbein fizzed a cross into the box and goalkeeper Tjark Ernst could only parry it to Remmert, however his shot from around 10 yards out went over the bar. “The ball just fell to me and I hit it first time. I was really frustrated that it went over,” he recalled.
Ultimately though, Remmert wasn’t too worked up over the missed chance once the game was over. “It’s tough to describe my feelings right now. I’m a bit lost for words. My family and lots of friends were at the game to all cheer me on and they were happy with me at the end.”
