Ron Schallenberg: We need to start performing

After the defeat at home to Darmstadt and the subsequent change in head coach, Schalke’s focus has now switched to the away game against Preußen Münster this Saturday night (28/9). Following Tuesday’s (24/9) training session, Ron Schallenberg spoke about the team chemistry and the upcoming fixture.

Ron Schallenberg on…

…the potential within the team:
I’m confident that we can end the bad run we’ve been on. To do that though, we have to perform well on the pitch for 90 minutes. We showed in the first half against Darmstadt that we can play better. The mental side of things obviously plays a role too – Friday’s result was the biggest blow I’ve seen us suffer since I’ve been at Schalke. We’ve got a solid group of players here and we don’t leave anyone in the lurch. It’s a challenging situation and we need to start performing.

…the mood within the squad:
It didn’t really change after the coach left – it was positive before anyway. We all get on with one another and are still enjoying playing football. We’re focused on our upcoming games.

There will be a special atmosphere there. It will be a really tricky game.

…interim coach Jakob Fimpel:
He’s doing a good job. He’s got a spring in his step and explained his ideas to us right away. It’s also a unique situation for him, but he’s well up for the challenge.

…the away game against Preußen Münster:
There will be a special atmosphere there. It will be a really tricky game, one where the ball will be in the air more than it’s on the floor. We have to be prepared to defend a lot of crosses, get stuck in and then try to play our own game when we’re in possession.
