Paul Seguin: Build on our performance against Düsseldorf and in Elversberg
Paul Seguin contributed two assists during FC Schalke 04's 4-2 win away at league leaders SC Paderborn on Friday (6/12). The 29-year-old also impressed in midfield, enjoying the most touches of any player (104) and completing a high number of passes. He also covered an impressive 12.2 kilometres.
Seguin received plenty of praise from his teammates and the club’s management following the full-time whistle. “I don’t really enjoy talking about my own performance. But, I think that I did a good job of helping us build up from the back. Being able to provide two assists makes me really happy,” he said. “We delivered a convincing performance as a team and deservedly won in the end.”
We delivered a convincing performance as a team and deservedly won in the end.
Winning away at the league leaders was a great feeling, Seguin revealed. Especially following on from the 3-0 defeat at home the week prior against 1. FC Kaiserslautern, it was important for the Royal Blues to show a different side to themselves. Now, Seguin is hoping that the team will be able to continue to play like they did in Paderborn over the coming weeks. “We want to build on it against Düsseldorf and in Elversberg,” he said. “We know that we have the quality to do so. But we also have to manage to show that out on the pitch in every game.”
A tough division
Despite going behind in the 11th minute against Paderborn, the Royal Blues did not let the setback affect them. “Their goal virtually came out of nowhere, because we were playing well already until then,” he remembers. “But, we kept our heads and continued to believe in our game plan. Even after taking a 3-2 lead, we didn’t give up but instead remained hungry for more.” Schalke’s persistence was rewarded with their 04th goal of the night shortly before the full-time whistle, with Seguin teeing up Janik Bachmann.
The 29-year-old reminisced about the moments spent celebrating with the fans afterwards. “I’m not satisfied yet, however. We want to manage to put together a run of several games with a win. The Bundesliga 2 is a tough division and things are tight in the table – anyone can beat anyone. You have to be fully prepared for every game.”
