Karel Geraerts: A deserved victory

Karel Geraerts praised his side after their 3-1 home win over FC St. Pauli on Friday night (1/3). He discussed the game at the post-match press conference alongside his opposite number Fabian Hürzeler. Defensive colleagues Ron Schallenberg and Tomas Kalas also gave their thoughts on the victory over the league leaders.

Karel Geraerts:

We knew that we were playing against a very good side, one that I believe could finish the season on the top of the table. I enjoy watching FC St. Pauli play football. We saw over the course of the 97 minutes that we absolutely deserved to win the game. I set up my team to press them high up the pitch and that’s exactly what we did. That was the only way we could deal with a side that possesses the individual quality they do. It was a really good team performance by us. I’m really proud of the lads after an intense week.

Fabian Hürzeler:

Karel Geraerts surprised us with his approach tonight. We didn’t expect Schalke to press us man for man. They were the better team, the hungrier side. We were missing the final pass in the second half. We have to be honest with ourselves and admit we didn’t deserve anything from tonight’s game.

Ron Schallenberg:

It was a solid team performance. Every player did the exact job asked of them. We wanted to get the fans on board with a passionate display and we managed that. We won the ball back on a number of occasions, attacked them well and scored three nice goals. We were focused for the whole 90 minutes and got really stuck in. We ultimately deserved the win. The whole team deserves praise, and the coach too for the brave tactics he went with for this match. I’d also like to say a big thank you to the fans. It was a different kind of game for me as I played as a centre-back instead of in midfield. Things went pretty well in my new role. We’ll have to see if I stay in this position in the coming weeks. Wherever I play, I just want to help the team out.

Tomas Kalas:

It was an amazing team performance, everybody gave their all out on the pitch. The result speaks for itself. Passion and commitment are just two of the basic things you have to show against a strong team like St. Pauli. Aside from those, we also showed our individual quality throughout the game and the result of that was three points. Our internal meeting during the week definitely helped us, but I don’t want to solely attribute the win to that. Sometimes a meeting that like is simply needed.
