Moussa Sylla: Keep working with intensity and focus

It was a case of close but no cigar for FC Schalke 04 on Saturday (22/11). In the Royal Blues’ clash against Preußen Münster, Moussa Sylla had five shots on goal but couldn’t find the back of the net. It was a different story for S04’s striker compared to last year, when he bagged a brace in a 2-1 away win at the LVM-Preußenstadion.

Sylla gets a shot off in the match against Münster.

Sylla’s final opportunity of the game presented itself in the fifth minute of added time, when he latched onto the ball on the right-hand side of the box and tried his luck from a tight angle. He was unable to beat the onrushing Morten Behrens with his effort, though. “I would’ve loved to score,” he grumbled after the game.

It would have been the winning goal in a chaotic game, with Schalke playing the majority of the second half against ten men after Münster’s starting keeper Johannes Schenk saw red in the 55th minute. Sylla was directly involved in the sending off. After Schalke’s number 9 was played through on goal, the keeper ventured a long way out of his goal and brought the attacker to ground with a hard tackle. “For me, it was a clear red card, because I would’ve been through on goal otherwise,” explained Sylla who was the fastest player on the pitch during the game, clocking a top speed of 34.31 km/h.

The uneven number of players on both sides changed the dynamic of the game. Schalke were unable to decisively exploit the gaps in the Münster defence. “As always, we’re going to analyse the game and then try to do things better next time,” said Sylla who will celebrate his 26th birthday three days before the upcoming match against SC Paderborn 07.

“We’re not going to beat ourselves up about not winning in Münster. It’s important to keep working with intensity and focus,” noted the Mali international. With this approach, his team have come out on top in nine of their 13 second division matches this season. The goal for Friday’s clash (28/11) against the league leaders is clear: get their tenth victory of the season.
