Keke Topp: I had a feeling I’d score
The Royal Blues took a point home to Gelsenkirchen after the 1-1 draw at SV Elversberg on Friday (19th April). “It was a tough game. Elversberg played really well. We’ll take the point away from home,” said Keke Topp, who scored a 59th-minute equaliser for the Knappen.
Kenan Karaman’s deflected cross landed directly at the feet of the 20-year-old forward, who finished with his left foot for his third goal and fifth goal involvement so far this season. “I could see that Simon was going to the near post, so I tried to drop back a bit. It was good that the ball landed where it did and I was there,” analysed Topp, whose goal earned the Knappen a point in Saarland. “I had a feeling I’d score,” said Topp.
Missed headed chance quickly forgotten
Eight minutes before, the striker had already had a big chance to equalise when he met Paul Seguin’s cross with a header that was easy for SVE goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof. “I was really disappointed with that. It’s not that it had to go in, but it should’ve at least posed more of a danger,” said Topp with reference to a chance that he quickly pushed to the back of his mind.
He had accepted head coach Karel Geraerts’ decision that he wasn’t in the starting eleven. “I’m 20 years old. I don’t have to start every game. But it’s also in the nature of a young player to want to start,” emphasised the youngster.
It’ll be a very difficult game, but at home, at 20:30 CEST and in front of over 60,000 fans, it won’t be easy for Düsseldorf to beat us!
The Knappen now have 36 points on the board. Topp knows that they will need a few more points to be sure of survival, and will be looking for three when S04 host Fortuna Düsseldorf at the VELTINS-Arena next Saturday (27th April). According to Topp: “It’ll be a very difficult game, but at home, at 20:30 CEST and in front of over 60,000 fans, it won’t be easy for Düsseldorf to beat us!”
