Marcin Kaminski: We knew it would probably be our last chance

A header from Marcin Kaminski in the 88th minute secured all three points for FC Schalke 04 on Sunday afternoon (6/4) at home against SSV Ulm 1846. Following the 2-1 victory for the Knappen, head coach Kees van Wonderen and his opposite number Robert Lechleiter gave their thoughts on the game, as did the match-winner Kaminski and his goalkeeper Justin Heekeren.

Kees van Wonderen:

It was a difficult game. I don’t think we played well in the first half. We tried to motivate the lads and change the team’s attitude at the break, which somewhat worked. Today is the second successive game in which we have come from behind to take something, and we even went on to win this one. These three points are important, we needed them. We want to start playing better football now and put in better performances at home. This is our fourth win at home in the second half of the season – we only won twice here before the midway mark, so that’s a positive and something to build on.

Robert Lechleiter:

Losing the game so late on really, really hurts because we played extremely well in front of this big crowd. We did well in the first half and had a few moments to strike from counter-attacks but couldn’t take advantage of them. That’s also how they scored their first goal. Nevertheless, we went ahead before that. The only things I can criticise my players for are not making use of our counter-attacks and not defending the corner late on well enough. We’re really disappointed about that corner – we would have picked up at least a point otherwise. If we continue to play with this intensity and passion, I’m certain we’ll pick up more points.

Marcin Kaminski:

I’m really pleased to have scored. We had just had a man sent off and knew that would probably be the only chance we got. We quickly discussed our plan for the corner and it worked perfectly. It wasn’t an easy game today. Our play was too slow in the first half and we didn’t have many chances. Our final ball wasn’t good enough. However, we showed in the second half that any team can struggle against us when we play at the right intensity and everyone shows what they are capable of. We therefore got the win at the death and we’re really pleased about the three points.

Justin Heekeren:

It was a tough start to today’s game. We struggled to control the play and Ulm had a lot of the ball. I’m pleased that it was a different game after the break. At half time, we discussed the fact that our fighting spirit was even more important than all our tactics. We improved and then got the fans behind us again. In the end, the three points are all that matter.
