Goalless draw in Ulm
FC Schalke 04 and SSV Ulm 1846 played out a 0-0 draw on Friday night (1/11) at the Donaustadion. Maurice Krattenmacher hit the bar with the hosts’ best chance, while Amin Younes came close to stealing all three points for the Royal Blues late on.
Seguin replaces Donkor in the starting XI
Head coach Kees van Wonderen made one change to the team from the DFB-Pokal tie in Augsburg three days ago. Paul Seguin replaced Anton Donkor, with the 26-year-old dropping to the bench. Ron Schallenberg, Amin Younes and Lino Tempelmann returned to the 20-man squad after missing the game in midweek.
Krattenmacher hits the bar – several S04 shots blocked
The home team put together the first notable attack of the game. In the fourth minute, Felix Higl couldn’t quite get on the end of Maurice Krattenmacher’s cross and Justin Heekeren was able to gather the ball. The crossbar saved Schalke after a quarter of an hour. Krattenmacher curled a shot past Heekeren but only onto the woodwork from just outside the area.
Schalke grew into the game after that close call and had several decent opportunities in the next few minutes. Derry John Murkin’s cross from the left wing was met by Mehmet Can Aydin in the six-yard box, however he could only connect with his shoulder and thus couldn’t find the target (17’). Paul Seguin’s corner six minutes later picked out the unmarked Tobias Mohr in the box, whose volley was blocked by Max Brandt (23’). Shortly afterwards, Taylan Bulut fired a shot towards goal after some ping-pong in the box, only to see Philipp Strompf get his head in the way (24’).
Heekeren gets the better of Krattenmacher and Higl
A lot of the Royal Blues’ attacking play came down the left flank, as Murkin and Mohr often looked to put balls into the box from out wide. Ulm had the better opportunities in the remainder of the first half: Justin Heekeren beat Krattenmacher’s effort to safety (37’) and then the S04 keeper was on hand to deny Higl four minutes later (41’), meaning the two teams went into the break level.
Krattenmacher involved once again for Ulm
Maurice Krattenmacher was again Ulm’s main attacking outlet in the second half. The attacking midfielder dribbled past several S04 players in the box in the 49th minute before shooting over the bar. Four minutes after that, the youngster’s attempt was deflected by Tomas Kalas, forcing Heekeren into action. Schalke’s goalkeeper then was required to make a fine save, tipping Krattenmacher’s dipping shot from the left side of the box over the bar.
Triple chance for Schalke at the death
Although Ulm remained the more dangerous of the two sides, Schalke managed to keep things pretty tight in the closing stages. Van Wonderen’s team generally struggled themselves in the final third, but did have a few opportunities to win the game at the death. Substitutes Anton Donkor and Amin Younes combined in the 88th minute as Younes saw his shot blocked on the line by Romario Rösch. Luka Hyryläinen got in the way of Derry John Murkin’s subsequent attempt and the ball then landed at Younes’ feet again. Goalkeeper Niclas Thiede made a good save to prevent Younes from snatching a victory for Schalke.
Regensburg at home
S04’s next game is on a Sunday (10/11) at home to SSV Jahn Regensburg. They are the visitors to the VELTINS-Arena for a 13:30 CET kick off on matchday 12.
