Karel Geraerts: We worked hard to get the three points

Following his side’s 1-0 home win against SV Wehen Wiesbaden on Saturday (17/2), Karel Geraerts spoke to the media about the game. Wiesbaden head coach Markus Kauczinski was also present at the press conference to talk about the clash. Ron Schallenberg and Henning Matriciani were interviewed about the crucial win after the final whistle.

Karel Geraerts:

It was a tight game that could’ve gone either way. The stats reflect that, too. We worked hard to get the three points. At the end of the day, physicality made the difference. We played very well off the ball, but we’ve got to use the ball better. We’re fully aware of this. I hope that winning will give our confidence a boost. We’ve been lacking that in our last few games. We’re aware of the situation we’re in, which is why a positive result today is important ahead of our next few matches.

Markus Kaunczinski:

Congratulations to FC Schalke 04. We’re disappointed, since we felt that we deserved a point. We had our moments, Schalke had theirs. I’m not putting the blame on my players, though. We’ve got to make sure that we reap what we sow and play better against teams that are physically stronger than us in future. We had chances in the closing stages. We’ll be annoyed for a day, then we’ll dust ourselves off and gear up for our next game.

Ron Schallenberg:

As expected, it was a tough game. We all had to work our socks off and take the situation in our stride. Our tactical approach was designed to make the opposition feel uncomfortable and force them into playing a lot of long balls. It was mostly about a willingness to run and being ready for action. On the whole, our gameplan worked pretty well. We know that there’s still room for improvement when we’re in possession. The important thing today is the result.

Henning Matriciani:

We ground out the win. After coming off the bench, I made a good start. It’s important to always be ready. I’m glad that I managed to play my part in the victory late on with my last-ditch tackle towards the end of the match. The three points are very important when you take the table into account. We didn’t buckle under pressure.
