Miron Muslic: The lads are keen to keep improving
FC Schalke 04 began their new Bundesliga campaign with a 3-0 defeat away to FC Augsburg on Sunday (30/8). The newly promoted side nevertheless had some promising spells, as both coaches acknowledged afterwards. Loris Karius and Timo Becker also believe there is plenty to build on.
Miron Muslic:
Augsburg fully deserved the win, but we played well in the first half, created three or four good chances of our own and had some promising moments. We have to make that kind of effort count, though. After the break, we tried to get the equaliser, but then made a mistake while playing out from the back and were punished straight away. The red card obviously had an impact on the game as well. If you want to come away from here with something, you have to take your chances. That’s the biggest lesson for us. The Bundesliga demands a different level of concentration, but the lads are keen to learn and keep improving.
Manuel Baum:
It was an even start. We should have taken the lead very early on, but we were also fortunate that Schalke didn’t score first. What mattered was how we reacted to those moments. We kept playing our football, gradually took more control and deservedly went in front. We should have made it 2-0 earlier after the break. When Schalke then went down to ten men, it brought back memories of the 1-0 leads against Union Berlin and Hamburg that we still let slip despite having an extra man. This time, though, we saw the game out well, deserved the win and now we have to keep going.
Loris Karius:
We felt good early on, but unfortunately not by the end. We settled into the game really well, were able to impose ourselves and created some good chances, but unfortunately didn’t take them to go ahead. Augsburg, on the other hand, took their chance in what had been a very even first half. The sending-off obviously made things even more difficult after the break, but until then it had been an open game. We’ll take the positives from it, but we’ll also learn from the things that didn’t work. Nothing surprised us and this is what we can expect week after week. We’ll keep working on it and we definitely have what it takes to pick up points.
Timo Becker:
I took a few knocks to my ankle today, but the defeat hurts more. FC Augsburg showed why they’ve been in the Bundesliga for so long. They managed the game cleverly after an even first half in which we could have scored ourselves. But in the Bundesliga, you get punished ruthlessly if you don’t take your chances. Everyone now knows what we’re up against over the coming months.
