Dejan Ljubičić: We need to show that we’re absolutely determined to score goals
Schalke suffered a 2-0 defeat at home to RB Leipzig on Saturday afternoon (31/10). Following the game at the VELTINS-Arena, head coach Miron Muslic and his opposite number Martín Demichelis shared their thoughts at the post-match press conference. Kenan Karaman and Dejan Ljubičić also gave their assessments of the 90 minutes. schalke04.de has rounded up the reaction.
Miron Muslic:
We changed our tactical setup today because we knew we needed to offer more going forward. Switching to a back four caused us no problems at all. In fact, we were aggressive and lively right from the start. The fans could see straight away that this was a much-improved performance. We could have taken an early lead, which would have given us a real boost.
Then a penalty was awarded against us, and Leipzig were very clever in how they won it. We went into half time 1-0 down, even though a draw would have been a fair reflection of the first half. We then had a big chance from a corner after the break, and that was the kind of moment we needed to get ourselves back into the game. The more space you give Leipzig, the more it plays into their hands. But we had to push higher up the pitch. The players gave everything and did all they could. It was a step forward.
Martín Demichelis:
After winning twice over the past week, it was really important for us to put in a good performance and pick up our first away win in the Bundesliga. We had to work hard for it against a Schalke side who are tough, awkward opponents. Teams that come here tend to create very little and struggle to score. We managed to score twice and created a few other opportunities as well. Now we have to keep going.
Kenan Karaman:
We’re obviously disappointed to have lost again today, but I thought we played well and were better than we’ve been in recent weeks. We played some good attacking football in the first half, although we still need to pose more of a threat going forward. There were plenty of positives to build on. The penalty set us back a bit. Personally, I didn’t think there was enough in it to warrant a penalty, but the referee gave it. We wanted to get back on level terms after the break, but we ended up getting caught on the break for their second goal. Overall, I’m taking the positives from today. We’ve made progress in possession and in our attacking play, and we showed more courage. The season is a marathon, and we’ll score goals and win games.
Dejan Ljubičić:
Against a team like Leipzig, you get punished for the smallest mistakes. We need to keep working hard and approach every training drill with complete focus. We need to show that we’re absolutely determined to score goals. We’ll keep going and won’t let up. The fans are a big help in that respect. Personally, I need a bit of time to get back into the swing of things and find my form again. I want to help the team in the coming games.
