Club statement following public comments made by Kees van Wonderen

The club management discussed the comments made by Kees van Wonderen on Saturday night in an internal meeting held on Easter Sunday (20/04). Frank Baumann, who will assume the role of board member for sport from 1st June, was also involved. As part of these discussions, there was of course direct communication with the head coach.

The specific details of these talks will remain confidential. However, the timing, location, and manner of the statements were critically addressed. The club management made it clear that they would have preferred a different approach from van Wonderen. In turn, he was given the opportunity to explain his position.

“As a matter of principle, we expect all concerns or critical points to be addressed internally. That’s where discussions need to be clear and honest. We must engage in open, constructive dialogue with one another, but such matters do not belong in the public domain,” summarised Matthias Tillmann, CEO of FC Schalke 04, speaking on behalf of the club’s management and sporting leadership.
