S04 lose 1-0 on Tedesco's return to Aue

Schalke went down to their first defeat of pre-season on Sunday by losing 1-0 to Erzgebirge Aue, who themselves are just a few days away from getting their season underway. Robert Herrmann’s late penalty was enough to give the hosts the win in the second half.

Tedesco greeted with applause

The game was special for Schalke boss Domenico Tedesco, who used to manage Aue before his move to Schalke. Leading Aue from a difficult situation to safety means he has a special place in the hearts of the fans and he was met with warm applause and cheers throughout. The whole venue was buzzing for the full 90 minutes as both clubs provided a wonderful atmosphere to play football in.

Caligiuri with the best chances

The Royal Blues were stronger in the first half in front of 15,250 people in Aue, though were unable to deliver the final pass. Daniel Caligiuri saw two chances to open the lead go begging, both times denied by Martin Männel in the Aue goal before the half-hour mark. The midfielder then set up Naldo from a corner, but the Brazilian’s header was also kept out and the sides went in goalless at the break.

Aue put together a few handy moves, but were unable to really trouble the Royal Blues going forward. The closest they came was from ex-Schalke player Luke Hemmerich, who was unable to beat Ralf Fährmann with his effort.

Salif Sane

Sané celebrates Schalke debut

Tedesco brought on Salif Sané in the second half to give the Senegal international his Royal Blue debut. Both teams made multiple changes for the second period, and the substitutions did little to improve the fluidity of the game; with only twenty minutes to go the crowd had barely seen a shot on target.

Breel Embolo had Schalke’s first opening of the half, but barely 60 seconds later Aue had been awarded a penalty after Alex Nübel had been deemed to trip Tom Baumgart. Robert Herrmann dispatched the resulting kick to give the hosts the lead. Yevhen Konoplyanka had a chance to grab an equaliser late on, but he was also denied.

Training camp in Mittersill, friendly with Angers

The Royal Blues will now travel to Mittersill for their second pre-season training camp until Monday, 8th August. As well as several training sessions, there will also be a friendly with French side Angers on the penultimate day of the trip. The game will be played at the Waldstadion in Mittersill at 15:30 CEST.
