Teuchert scores and has numerous other chances

In front of the approximately 4000 spectators, which included a certain Salif Sané, Domenico Tedesco’s side quickly took control of the game as expected. The fans didn’t have to wait long to see the first goal, as a free-kick from Daniel Caligiuri was flicked into the middle by Amine Harit before being finished off by Cedric Teuchert from point blank range. Alessandro Tomasello, who played for a number of the youth teams in Schalke’s Knappenschmiede academy, tried to clear but failed – 1-0 to Schalke (6’).

The Royal Blues created a number of further chances as the first half ran on. Yevhen Konoplyanka, Cedric Teuchert and Daniel Caligiuri all had their opportunities, but lacked the final bit of precison at the crucial moment.

Naldo and his two defensive partners barely let Essen into their half at the other end and dictated the play from the back. The only real threat came from a free-kick, but Sebastian Michalsky’s attempt flew clearly over the bar.

Ten changes at the break

Domenico Tedesco made ten switches to start the second period of play. The lone man to stay on the pitch was Niklas Wiemann. The Knappen continued to have the majority of possession despite the change in personnel, but Essen remained compact and hard to break down. It was hard for Schalke to create dangerous goalscoring opportunities.

Mark Uth could have written himself onto the scoresheet in the 59th minute, but the new signing couldn’t quite extend himself enough to get on the end of the cross from Franco di Santo to make it 2-0. Guido Burgstaller also had the chance to score Schalke’s second ten minutes later, but the captain for the second half also couldn’t convert. In summary, Schalke dominated but were not forceful enough. The game would end 1-0.

More friendlies to come
