Friendly in Kaliningrad cancelled
Schalke's planned friendly on March 22nd versus Russian second division side FK Baltika Kaliningrad, which was intended to inaugurate the stadium before its use in this summer's World Cup, has been called off due to weather concerns.
This decision has been made by the Russian Ministry for Sport. Due to the recent extreme cold being experienced in Russia, the authorities have come to the decision that no games should be played in any of the stadiums being used for the World Cup before April 11th. “Due to the ministry’s recommendation and the current weather, we’ve decided to call the game off,” explained Alexander Rolbinov, Vice-President of the local government in Kaliningrad. “We apologise to those fans who have already bought tickets and would like to thank Gazprom for their assistance in making such a game initially possible.”
