UEFA executive committee awards EURO 2024 to Germany

The UEFA executive committee named Germany as the host nation for UEFA EURO 2024 on Thursday afternoon (27/9).

Gelsenkirchen can look forward to another “summer fairytale”. Peter Peters, who alongside his role as financial director at Schalke, is also vice president of the DFL and a board member at the DFB, has two reasons to be pleased over the announcement: “I’m happy about the committees’ decision for both Germany and for Schalke. Although I have been present at a number of similar events, the moment it was announced was still very exciting for me. I was a part of the 2006 World Cup due to my DFB and Schalke work and I remember it as a fantastic and emotional festival of football. Therefore I’m very happy that in 2024 Schalke and Germany can welcome millions of excited football fans again and enjoy the football on show as well.”

Chairman of the supervisory board, Clemens Tönnies, shared Peters’ thoughts: “I’m delighted for the whole country, as we’ve shown on many occasions that we’re great hosts. I’m also pleased for Schalke because we will be able to welcome football fans from all around the world to our Royal Blue home just like in 2006. From a personal point of view, I also cannot wait as it will be another footballing summer here in Gelsenkirchen.”

Gelsenkirchen’s mayor, Frank Baranowski, also feels that Schalke and the city of Gelsenkirchen are well-equipped hosts, who already have plenty of experience in staging large events: “We’ve already hosted a number of large sporting events here, such as the World Cup in 1974 & 2006, Euro 1988, the Ice Hockey World Championships  in 2010 and the Champions League final in 2004. We cannot wait to enjoy some cracking games in 2024 and welcome all of the visitors to our city,” said the mayor.
