Alessandro Schöpf: We need to be more effective

David Wagner and Bremen coach Florian Kohfeldt both analysed Werder’s win on Saturday in the VELTINS-Arena. Alessandro Schöpf also gave his thoughts.

David Wagner:

Today was a game of two halves. We chose to play defensively in the first half in order to not concede as many goals as we have been recently. We wanted to restore some solidity and confidence, so that we could come out and play the way we want to after the break – which we did. We have had problems going forward in recent weeks. The second half was better. I don’t want to say that it was good, but it was better than the first half. At the end of the day, we’ve lost again and their goal came from another individual error. We’re not taking enough of our chances to be successful at the moment. We didn’t have that many opportunities, but we had better chances and more than them.

Florian Kohfeldt:

This is an extremely important away win. We played really well in the first half, had a lot of the ball and had a few good moments. Even though our goal came from distance, we still deserved the lead at the break. Schalke were on top in the second half and pressed us higher up the pitch. The game became more hectic as a result. Schalke had a big chance, but Jiri Pavlenka made a great save. Apart from that, we didn’t allow them many chances. Overall, I think we deserved to win, even if we had to fight hard in the second half. We’ve now taken seven points from the last three games. Looking at the table, you can see how important they were.

Alessandro Schöpf:

We wanted to defend well and not concede a goal in the first half, which we unfortunately didn’t manage. We tried to turn it around after the break, which is why we made some tactical changes and pressed them quicker. We got a couple of chances from this – like we did in the Hinrunde. That was the only positive from today. We need to start taking these chances. We have to be more effective and stop making mistakes. Our situation won’t improve until we start taking points. We need to continue trying to pick up points – as soon as possible.
