Benjamin Stambouli: Take the positives from the season

A goalless draw at home to VfB Stuttgart on Saturday (18/05) ended a Bundesliga campaign that FC Schalke 04 will want to forget as soon as possible. Benjamin Stambouli wants to take all the positives from the season into the 19/20 campaign.

“It was a long season, that we can hopefully learn a lot from in order to come back stronger next time around,” said the vice-captain. “When you go through such a tough time, it is always also an opportunity to gain experience.” Stambouli said the most important outcome from the season was remaining in the top flight.

The midfielder is eager about the upcoming season under new coach David Wagner, but says he learnt a lot for the future from the time under Huub Stevens. “He put a lot of emphasis on discipline. You learn new things from every different coach,” said Stambouli.

I’ll want to be back playing football again after four days

The Schalke players have left for the summer break, with exception of the international players. Stambouli and his teammates will look to come back with new, fresh and positive mindsets. “It is important to give the body time to recover, then prepare well and start the new season strongly,” said the 28 year old, who also admitted he doesn’t find the lack of football easy. “I am happy to be able to take a holiday, but I know myself and I know that I will want to be back out there playing again after four days at the most.”
