Christian Gross: We need to be better in the final third

Neither of the Swiss head coaches were able to celebrate a win on Saturday night (13/2). Both Christian Gross and Urs Fischer spoke to the media after the game in Berlin. Ralf Fährmann and Suat Serdar also had their say on the goalless draw.

Christian Gross

Christian Gross:

It was a hard-fought game, as we expected. We were slightly on top in the first half, but let that slip after the break. We can definitely build on our performance in the first 45 minutes though. Overall, the lads fought well. We obviously need points, and even though we got one, we need all three in future. We need to put more pressure on in the final third and be more purposeful in front of goal.

Nabil Bentaleb did well. The lads have accepted him back into the squad. You could see, however, that he was lacking a bit of match fitness. I think Nabil could be really important for us in the coming weeks.

Urs Fischer:

We had several chances to win the game, but at the moment the ball just won’t go in. You have to be happy with a point when you don’t take your chances. We’re not clinical at the moment, which makes it hard to win games.

Ralf Fährmann:

Over the 90 minutes, we didn’t create enough chances to win the game. Ultimately, we weren’t dangerous enough in the final third. A draw is fair, but a win would obviously have been a lot better. We need as many points as possible. I still believe we can stay up. We need to go into every game ready to fight and give everything. The next match is the derby. This match always has its own rules. We need to go into the game with that in mind and try to get points.

Suat Serdar:

We wanted to take all three points no matter what. In the end it’s just the one, but this point could help us come the end of the season. From my point of view the draw is fair. Both teams worked well without the ball. We showed that we’re still alive and kicking out there. We put together a few nice sequences but we didn’t pose enough of a goal threat. If you want to win then you have to take the few opportunities that you get. Now it’s the derby and we will do everything we can to win the match.
